Such as apple iMac that was a remarkable product. It has perfect industry design and poster design.
The "i", stands for "Internet, Individual, Instruct, Inform and Inspire". With a translucent plastic cover and matching peek-a-boo panels on the contoured keyboard and mouse, this deep green and white wedge has undeniable appeal.
Apple replaced Bondi blue with new colors—initially in January 1999 with blueberry, strawberry, tangerine, grape, and lime ; later other colors, such as graphite, ruby, sage, snow, and indigo, and the "BlueDalmatian" and "Flower Power" patterns.
"Multi-color" has become the best marketing advantage. Candy-like bright colorsnot only overturned the previous computer usual color, but also changed the buying habits of ordinary consumers, within slogan “ think different” iMac brought a 40% increase of market in 1999.

blog assignment 8

In this week lecture we learn that one of the main objectives of the Bauhaus was to unify art, craft, and technology. The machine was considered a positive element, and therefore industrial and product design were important components. Vorkurs ("initial" or "preliminary course") was taught; this is the modern day "Basic Design" course that has become one of the key foundational courses offered in architectural and design schools across the globe. There was no teaching of history in the school because everything was supposed to be designed and created according to first principles rather than by following precedent.

Hannes Meyer argued that design is a product of “function x economy”, aligning design with a scientific model driven by new technologies and manufacturing potential. I m agree with that.

I think that art and design is different. Art is one of the utopian spirit, and design is to help people living with better life. Therefore, the priority consideration of design  is  function and economy. Second is add arts elements.

With the history, age, and political influence, people's expectations of the product's features will be different. Product process and product cost will be affected by development of new technology. Therefore, the "design" is to find balance of  function and process, to gain economic value. This is different from the art.

7: The symbolic universe

After I read "Utopia Realized" I understand that Utopia is an ideal community or society possessing a perfect socio-politico-legal system. It is goal of social progress. It is our expectation of a better life. And our entirecommunity is to move forward in this utopia.

In this week lecture we discussed the concept of the “symbolic universe”  Proverbs, moral maxims, wise sayings, mythology, religions and other theological thought, metaphysical traditions and other value systems are part of the symbolic universe. They are all ways to legitimize established institutions. On the other hand this symbol is often to strengthen the collective consciousness, only such emotion and consciousness in order to make society as a unity and personality.

In my opinion with the technology and media at an increasing rate, there are many symbolic universe around the world today.Such as the WTO World Trade Center and the White House, not only buildings but also some personal image has become a symbolic universe as well.  For example,Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc., even some of them were destroyed or die, But they are still embodies a symbolic value.

I believe that The Internet has become a social universes today, Although it is still young, but there are also symbolic universes in it as well. Such as facebook, twitter and google +, Currently those icons filled every corner of internet. These symbols affect people's habits. In addition to these features and many more symbolic meaning.

 assignment 6: Modern Vision

I m disagree with Benjamin argues, that he said "To an ever greater degree the work of art reproduced becomes the work of art designed for reproducibility. From a photographic negative, for example, one can make any number of prints; to ask for the authentic print makes no sense."

Modern reproduce have different with traditions reproducibility. traditional Replication is to shorten the distance between people and art to catch the beauty, would give up its authenticity in replication. No matter how realistic replication was always to lose the original Aura. but modern reproduce Copy has become the art of making an inevitable part of the production process. Artists doing replication for disseminate, promote and profit。Aura has deteriorate, not disappeared here。

Through video, audio tapes, CD, VCD, Hollywood movies, popular music became acceptable art to all public, people do not need to focus and ceremonies, easily get entertainment. Today, computer network technology to make public art into consumer culture. There is no mainstream culture. The other side of the traditional arts have been pushed to the edge of the state. In part, that Benjamin's discourse, but also exposed the insufficient it.Because the nature of Internet culture is still not precisely defined, as if some of the theoretical basis of network culture, the theory may have lost the intensity and focus.

: Colour

In my opinion, artists always  influence our understanding of color by experience and experimentation.  In particular, I think the vivid coloration of Van Gogh paintings enhance the visual impression of people.  As I know, Van Gogh's paintings grew brighter in color, and he developed an unique and highly recognizable style which became fully realized during the time he stay in Arles in 1888.  The color of his painting had strong contrast, less color gradients, weaken light but improved vivid coloration and emotional impact.  However, Van Gogh's painting was extricated from reality.  His paintings reflected the motion of himself and from the cockles of his heart.  Therefore, the colors of the painting characterized intensity of color.  The vibrant light in Arles inspired Van Gogh and turned into the paintings with flat, vivid color and lack perspective  but contained strong and intense motion.  More specifically, the experience and experimentation helped Van Gogh developed his unique gridded perspective frame.  I think Van Gogh makes a perfect example to the experience and experimentation of artists influenced our understanding of color.

blog assignment 4: Ornament or Nature

Adolf Loos argued in 1908 that “The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from objects of daily use.” I do not agree with his view.

He rejected all the Ornament value as toilet graffiti and other bad behavior of modern civilization, in my opinion that is an arbitrary decision。

In the Industrial age, Ornament is the only way to reduce the sense of apathy which cause by industrialization.  In particular, people need passion of decoration in order to avoid the simplicity of lifestyle.

I believe Ornament is the the progress of design. that will not Obstruction of  civilization. Sometimes, Ornament promoted reform of product design.

However,  "Ornament and crime" Still play an important role. Loos Correct the impact of  the  people who  live in the over-Ornament time.

Wallpaper illustrating the Crystal Palace, about 1853

Jones Farm Museum, New Hampshire

"a modern pattern to delight the heart of any boy or girl."
Sears wallpaper sample book, 1952.

Wallpaper with formalised floral motif, Owen Jones, mid-19th century. Museum no. 8341.57

Owen Jones (1809-74), was an architect and designer in the nineteenth century.  His authority about historic pattern and ornament can still influence contemporary design.  For example, one of Jones’ greatest research book The Grammar of Ornament (1856), is still an important source book for Jones’ later fellow designers and succeeding generations.  In this book, Jones argued that "Construction should be decorated. Decoration should never be purposely constructed."  I am definitely agree with this point.

In my opinion, construction is a three-dimensional object.  It can be ornamented by 2D decoration such as flat wall paper or any printing image.  However, the decoration of a flat surface should be flat itself rather than giving an illusion of three-dimensional ornament or a three-dimensional picture, which will make the decoration look even worse. Thus, Jones’ “decoration should never be purposely constructed” is a good principle of design.

Furthermore, I think ornament should not be a contradiction.  A good principle of ornament design should combine at least three factors include colours, construction and material.  A good ornament design makes all three factors support each other in order to achieve beauty and utility.

The example I use is the wallpaper that illustrate in the Crystal Palace in 1853.
The illusion in the picture was a building with depth and shadows.  I think this wallpaper is obvious not a honest and prior decoration design.   The pattern should composed of simple forms, which would confirm the wall as a flat surface, rather than disguising or contradicting it. In my opinion, wall should be decorated in a manner which won’t break its flatness and solidity.

blog assignment 2

Integrated rococo carving, stucco and fresco at Zwiefalten

One of the continuing curve in design can identify from integrated rococo carving, stucco and fresco at Zwiefalten.  I believe this stucco and fresco represent a result of the "sensuous impulse" in Rococo style.  The stylistic movement known as rococo, which began in eighteenth-century France. It has infused design objects with a sinuous, organic, and sensuous impulse for three centuries.
Rococo style was a palace art and this style was deriving from French classicism.  However, French classicism was not very rigorous before eighteenth-century.

Rococo style, in other cause, inspired from "Learning from Nature". In particular, by the end of the king's long reign, rich Baroque designs were giving way to lighter elements with more curves and natural patterns. But it was not an inevitable consequence of the Italian Baroque style. During that period,  "Learning from Nature" just let nature subject to society , but society was not ready to make people feel in their natural being. Thus, the painters, sculptors, and wood house at that time were all the people flocking to the Rococo culture.  Rococo style was in every everywhere and every corner of society included royal paintings, architecture, and clothing. Though Rococo style admired by royal social class and became shine and glorious, it lost its initial concept of being nature.  Unfortunately, the characteristic of winding curves of Rococo style limited designers' creativities.  For example, the painters and sculptors tried to impress nobility by overuse continuing curve, instead of developing other techniques that might worked well in Rococo style as well. Especially, the late Rococo was too flashy and meaningless.

DSDN 171: blog assignment 1

By reading The Shape of Time I learned “Purpose has no place in biology, but history has no meaning without it.” And also understand how important design existence with meaning, as Kubler say, "...existence without meaning seems terrible in the same degree as meaning without existence seems trivial"

For example as the industrial project of the entire production system is basis on the structure and specifications of the product. therefore, industrial design getting very important. if some details of design is meaningless, then the production will spend a lot of time to adjust costs and replacement of equipment, materials and labor. Opposite, good product design, not only superior in function, but also ease of production, low production costs, so that will increase the competitiveness of their products. Many companies in the market competition are great attention to design details,to design a low cost but has a unique feature of the product. They knew that good design is the key to winning customers.

APPLE is the one of best industrial design in the world, the picture show that inside of imac without any wasted space.
